Data Analysis, Sampling, and Survey Design

 

AEP professionals are known for their creative and innovative approaches to solving challenging economic problems. AEP uses state-of-the-art database, spreadsheet, and statistical software to assemble and analyze large, complex sets of data. Where data are too voluminous to be studied completely, AEP develops sampling plans from which sound conclusions can be drawn. AEP also has extensive experience in developing surveys and analyzing survey data.



 
Market Analysis of Firms and Industries
 

A major portion of AEP's work concerns the analysis of firms, markets, and industries. This work has covered a broad range of industries and economic issues, and has included studies of the following:

  • Industry concentration and the degree of competition in markets
  • Impact on price, competition, and other factors in markets from the entry of firms or from proposed mergers or acquisitions
  • Consumer behavior, including purchasing patterns, knowledge of products or markets, and responses to changes in prices, products, and other variables

AEP uses a variety of tools, including statistical analysis of data, economic modeling of markets, and surveys to study the behavior of firms, markets, and industries.


 
Valuation of Assets
  Valuation of assets can present difficult problems because there may be no easily discernable market for the asset or no obvious way to measure its value. AEP has extensive experience performing valuation of such difficult-to-measure assets. This work has included valuation studies of corporations, intellectual property, stock options and pension funds, as well as reasonable royalties for patented processes and inventions.

 
Formulation of Sound Economic Business Strategies
  AEP offers a range of consulting services designed to help clients determine optimal business strategies. AEP performs cost-effectiveness, pricing, and elasticity studies. AEP can also assist in structuring prices to create appropriate incentives for end users and to maximize a firm's profitability. AEP aids in developing appropriate economic incentives between parties and, for example, helps structure incentive schemes for employees. AEP also offers advice regarding economic issues related to regulation, and conducts in-depth economic analyses to justify or attack mergers and acquisitions. For example, MCI hired AEP to evaluate the effect a proposed merger would have on competition in the long-distance telephone market. These services help clients to become more economically efficient, to achieve optimal pricing of products, and to develop economically appropriate strategies in relation to regulation or the actions of rivals in the marketplace.
