John Raisian has been a Hoover fellow since 1986 and director of the Hoover Institution since 1989. Prior to this time, Dr. Raisian was a member of the economics faculties at the University of Washington and the University of Houston , where he received a distinguished teaching award. He also served as special assistant for economic policy and director of research and technical support in the U.S. Department of Labor, where he received the Distinguished Service Award. At the end of his service in Washington , he served as executive director of the President's Task Force on Food Assistance, a six-month assignment investigating the adequacy and efficiency of the nation's food assistance programs. Before joining the Hoover Institution, Dr. Raisian was president of an economic consulting company in Los Angeles. His research has explored numerous issues relating to labor economics, the application of economic principles to public policy formation, and the appropriate role of government in society. Dr. Raisian has published numerous articles on the economics of labor markets, one of which resulted in an award for the best publication of the year in Economic Inquiry , awarded by the Western Economic Association in 1979. Dr. Raisian's broad experience as an expert witness has involved labor, antitrust, and other economic issues.

Dr. Raisian received his B.A. in economics and mathematics from Ohio University in 1971 and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
